[ ]  Hurricane in Puerto Rico

Residents of Puerto Rico still face wide spread power outages due t o Hurricane Fiona. On Sunday, President Biden declared a state of emergency on the island after the hurricane struck this week. He said that h e will make sure the federal team remains on the job to restore power. Puerto Rico i s still recovering from the damage of Hurricane Maria five years ago. Eight people are reported dead including a four-month old infant. Hurricane Fiona also hit the Dominican Republic and is predicted to pass Bermuda as a category four hurricane on the way to Canada.

THE ON-GOING WAR IN UKRAINE IS A TOP ISSUE FOR WORLD LEADERS AT THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY THIS WEEK ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT MET TUESDAY FOR THE ANNUAL GENERAL DEBATE. THE ASSEMBLY IS THE FIRST NON- VIRTUAL OR HYBRID MEETING SINCE THE START OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT (VOH-LOH- DEMEER) (ZEH-LEHN-SKEE) STATED WEDNESDAY THAT RUSSIA DESERVES JUST PUNISHMENT FOR THE WAR IN HIS COUNTRY. THE RECORDED MESSAGE FROM UKRAINE WAS HIGHLIGHTED B Y PRESIDENT BIDEN'S STATEMENT THAT THE WORLD'S BLOOD SHOULD RUN COLD OVER THIS CONFLICT. OTHER AREAS OF NOTE IN THE

ASSEMBLY WERE CLIMATE CHANGE, THE NEED FOR REPRESENTATION OF AFRICAN NATIONS AT THE U.N., AND STOPPING IRAN'S NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM.

[ ] On campus Blackout Sept. 24

This Saturday, the African Students Union is hosting its annual Blackout event. It's a

cookout and celebration, and this year they are partnering with the Black Women's Association. From 5 to 10pm, Stony Brook students can enjoy the festivities at Staller Steps. It will have free food, music, and dancing. The L'Afrique dance team will hold a performance during the event. The African students union is excited for a big turnout and urges students they won't want to miss it.

[ ]  Adnan Syed released after wrongful murder conviction

A man who was convicted of murder 23 years ago is now free. (Add-nan) (Sai-edd) was released from prison Monday after spending decades fighting for his innocence. In 1999, he was convicted for the murder of his high school classmate Min Lee. Judge Melissa Phinn of Baltimore reversed the conviction, explaining that prosecutors had faulty evidence in the original trial. A new investigation is pointing to two alternative suspects. Prosecutors have 30 days to decide if they will proceed with a new trial or drop the charges against him.

Thailand is in mourning hours after a deadly attack by a gunman who left thirty-eight people dead including himself. Panya Kamrab, a former police officer armed with a handgun and knife attacked a child-care facility in northeastern Thailand. This is considered the deadliest mass shooting in a Southeast Asian nation ever carried out by a lone perpetrator. The attacker later on killed his wife, child and then himself.

OVER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY PEOPLE ARE REPORTED DEAD AND THREE HUNDRED PEOPLE INJURED AT THE SOCCER STADIUM IN MALANG, INDONESIA. TENS OF THOUSANDS OF FANS PACKED THE STADIUM TO WATCH AREMA BEAT THE OPPOSING TEAM. AREMA LOST WITH A SCORE OF THREE TO TWO AND ANGRY FANS IMMEDIATELY RUSHED THE FIELD. POLICE OFFICERS BEGAN SHOOTING TEAR GAS INTO THE CROWDS AND BEAT CIVILIANS WITH BATONS.

EMS lieutenant, Alison Russo Elling, i, being mourned after being fatally stabbed last week

She was promoted as family and friends gathered on Wednesday at her funeral to pay her last respects Russo Elling has worked for the New York City Emergency Medical Service for 24 years. Her body was transported in an ambulance instead of a hearse, to honor her decades of service to the FDNY. Russo Elling's daughter urges people to not have so much hatred for the man who killed her mother. She tells people instead to continue remembering Russo Elling for how heroic she was, and honoring her years of service.

Sanger residence hall will likely be renamed Dr. May Edward Chinn Hall. The SUNY board of trustees is reviewing the proposed name change by the Stony Brook University council. CHINN who died in 1980 WAS A DEDICATED PHYSICIAN and PASSIONATE SUPPORTER OF EARLY CANCER SCREENINGS. She was THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN TO GRADUATE FROM NYU'S BELLEVUE HOSPITAL IN MANHATTAN. CHINN HALL WILL BE THE FIFTH SPACE on campus NAMED AFTER A BLACK HISTORICAL FIGURE.
